There is hardly a need to introduce the capital of France to anybody. Paris is full of attractions and iconic things to see. The trouble is - the list can be overwhelming and you need to get your homework done. Narrow down your list and make sure you research tickets and queues for attractions to maximise your time. Top things to see include:
The Eiffel Tower: This is the must-see ultimate attraction in Paris. Gustave Eiffel spent two years working to erect this iconic monument for the World Exhibition of 1889. Today the Eiffel Tower attracts hundreds of thousands of visitors from all over the world. The tower is divided into a lower balcony and the top nest. Both offer spectacular views of the city - day or night. Expect queues! We advise you to get there early in the morning to save some time.
Paris' Louvre Museum: The museum is massive and it's hard to see everything it offers in one visit. Do your research prior to your visit and shortlist things you want to see - aim straight for them. Take your time and enjoy it!
Basilique du Sacré-Coeur: A spectacular Basilica built on top of the Montmartre stands out above the city's horizon. Easy to get by metro. We recommend visiting after dark to admire the fantastic view of the city's lights.
Catacombs of Paris: These underground ossuaries hold the remains of over six million people transferred there after a crisis where marshy burial grounds exposed remains back in the 17th Century. The Catacombs of Paris are an extraordinary experience. Expect queues at the entrance.
Paris Charles de Gaulle Airport is one of the busiest airports in Europe. It's located 34 km from the city centre so you will need to consider the cost and time of getting to town. You have three main options:
Taxi: The fastest way to reach the city. It will cost you a flat fee of €60 and 40 minutes.
Bus: Bus tickets cost €11.50 and the journey time is around 70 minutes.
Train: You can take the RER train. This takes around 50 minutes to reach the city and costs only €10.
A visa is not required for either tourist or business stays. You’ll need to comply with all government travel requirements. Please view specific documentation requirements on the U.S. Department of State's website. U.S. citizens don’t require transit visas to connect through Ireland into Europe.
For citizens of all other countries travelling from the U.S., requirements vary. It’s your own personal responsibility to ensure you’re in compliance with all relevant requirements, and you’re advised to check with the Irish consulate for the correct information.
